Work Experience

By Bunch Collective

Having recently hosted a year 10 work experience student, it prompted some reflection on what each of us did for work experience way back then….

Below is an insight into how the team at Bunch approached work experience and whether or not it contributed to our career path choices later on.

Matthew Hannebery

Managing Director

Completed work experience: At a physiotherapy clinic.

Went on to: Study a Physical Education Degree at Victoria University, as he unfortunately didn’t get the marks to get into Physio, so took another pathway. However, by the time he completed the degree his passion for Physio had diminished. Matt then became self-employed starting an office stationery and print management business before entering the marketing industry and starting this business 15 years ago.

Has now been in the industry for: 15 years.

Did work experience relate to his eventual career path? No.

Luke Hannebery

Director

Completed work experience: At  Orthopaedic Appliances as he had an interest in health sciences.

Went on to: Travel the world after finishing high school and then came back to work in the family office stationery & print management business. Luke then entered the marketing industry alongside Matt, where they started this business 15 years ago.

Has now been in the industry for: 15 years.

Did work experience relate to his eventual career path? No.

Rowena Horne

Head of Production

Completed work experience: In occupational therapy and speech pathology at a hospital in Sydney as she wanted to be an OT (prompted by a book she had recently read with an inspiring character!), however with the pre-requisites for University involving chemistry this quickly changed her mind.

Went on to: Study Media and Communications as part of a very broad ranging degree. Row’s first job out of University was with an events and TV production company as a production assistant (lunch buyer, freight packer and broadcast fax sender) and she then worked her way up from there.

Has now been in the industry for: 18 years.

Did work experience help relate to her eventual career path? No.

Stephanie Bradshaw

Creative Director

Completed work experience: At a window dressing/props company in Moorabbin and wanted to be an interior designer.

Went on to: Study a Product Design degree and began her first job as a junior at a product design company. Steph then moved to Singapore to work in events and exhibitions and then to Sydney for activations and marketing experiences. Steph is now back in Melbourne as the Creative Director at Bunch.

Has now been in the industry for: 20 years.

Did work experience relate to her eventual career path? Yes!

Zara Karaduman

Executive Producer

Completed work experience: At the Hilton Adelaide in the room service department (where she was lucky enough to serve Danni Minogue (who was there at the time for Grease). At that point Zara envisaged working in hotels, as she had a desire to travel, or be a lawyer.

Went on to: Study Hotel and Business Management, and work in events in hotels. Zara then transitioned over to the agency side of things and has lived and worked in the UK, Australia, Canada and the US.

Has now been in the industry for: 15 years.

Did work experience relate to her eventual career path? Yes!

Marcus Fitzgerald

Producer

Completed work experience: At an architecture firm in Hobart, as at that point his interests swayed between both architecture and sales & marketing for the hospitality industry.

Went on to: Study a Bachelor of Commerce at the Blue Mountains International Hotel Management School. Marcus first discovered his passion for events after completing an elective in event management during his second year. The course was facilitated by an agency from Sydney who offered him some casual work whilst completing the last six months of his degree. After graduating he worked with them for two years before making the move to freelancing working on a mix of public and corporate events for a year. After taking 6 months off to travel the world he returned to Australia and moved to Melbourne where he’s been working with Bunch for almost five years.

Went on to: Journalism, magazine writing and publishing, advertising and now Bunch!

Has now been in the industry for: 30 years.
